A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.
Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.
The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.
The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.
Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

Lots of things to see - Museum, art gallery etc, all close to each other. Some things are further afield and worth seeing, so a car is very useful/necessary. I discovered the buses don't take cash and I would have to apply for a travel card 7-10 days in advance to get it in the mail! They don't take credit cards either (apparently that is coming in November 2024, but not much use to me when my friends weren't able to give me a lift as planned!) I can't believe a city that wants visitors makes it IMPOSSIBLE to go anywhere by bus or light train!

Canberra is a wonderful city to visit.
Canberra is a wonderful city to visit. Heaps to see and do with some fabulous restaurants. Gorgeous in the Autumn, especially on the lake. Take into account there is a lot of construction happening in the city so some attractions like the War Memorial are a bit less than they can be. The extension to the light rail is still under construction but will be fabulous when it's done.

Love Canberra. Used to live in Canberra and now retired to the country. Still visit Canberra regularly due to family still living there. Lot of people give Canberra lots of negativity, but the city is beautiful and a great place to visit.

I would say if a coloured map of Canberra could be available to people, A Map will full details including sites to see eg Resturants, parliament house, mountain drives, tours. I did find a map but the lettering was too small to read and insufficient information. The Name of the Apartments could be clearly shown.

School holiday trip with the grandsons.
School holiday trip with the grandsons. They loved the dinosaur museum and miniature village.
So many places to visit, we needed more time.
The work going on around the War Memorial made it a bit difficult to look around the grounds and parking was limited as it was the week before Anzac Day and many areas closed off. We decided to give it a miss.
The hotel is very central so everything we wanted to do was a short drive away.
The restaurant and the buffet breakfast ($28 per person each morning) had great food, service and ambience. The jungle setting is really nice.
The room was comfortable as well. We were very impressed with the fact that we were able to have a king and single bed in the room.
Value for money was really impressive as well. Price was low but the hotel wasn't cheap. We will stay here again if we visit Canberra again.
A very well run hotel , staff are friendly and attentive . The room was a perfect size , with views to the swimming pool , robes were also provided . The bathroom was excellent , a nice big shower . A very comfortable bed . The room was also spotlessly clean . Stayed 4 days and was like a home away from home , we visit Canberra often and this was our first stay at Garden city Hotel , we will definatly stay again .
3 bedroom apartment suitable for our needs. Family of 3 adults, 2 children and 1 infant. Location excellent with lots of good eating places and shops within walking distance. Also easy walk to lake & parliamentary circle attractions.
Appreciative that the bed configuration was set-up as per request, and non-standard.
TVs in 2 of the bedrooms appreciated although they were cheap and the sound very poor.
We did not have breakfast at the location, but the facilities around the hotel were nice. The room was comfy, the amenities were free which was a big plus, and the location in Canberra is great with the underground parking. The reception waived our underground fee as well, which was really nice and a nice parting gift from the hotel. I'd recommend this place in Canberra for sure.
Host was very helpful; provided detailed instructions which helped navigate what can be a tricky building complex and carpark first time around. Location is close to centre of Canberra. Although the apartment fronts a relatively busy road, the double glazing does a good job keeping the noise at bay. Apartment was neat and clean, and is good value. Would stay again.
Sundown Villas were located close to our family and therefore very convenient. The villa was very well priced. We didn't need to use the cooking facilities, but they are quite limited. Electric blanket was greatly appreciated in the middle of winter in Canberra, as were the heaters. The unit had been freshly painted and was clean and bright.
We did a lot of research before booking East Hotel and we were very happy with our decision. The hotel is in a great location with an easy walk to cafes in 2 directions.
Best part was the free bikes which we took out for the day to explore Canberra.
We really enjoyed our meal at the welcoming pub across the road.
We would happily return.
Firstly, staff on the front desk A+.
Young man was great, showed me local spots to check out very knowledgeable and very helpful. The staff taking dinner orders and waiting on us were great and happy to help.
Location not too bad, we found Canberra easy to get around and the hotel was a 5- 10 min drive to get anywhere.
Location was great and hotel was clean. Service staff were great and the rooftop bar was very nice. Unfortunately the rooftop bar closed after 6pm due to a private event but we will definitely go back next time we are in Canberra
The hotel is located near the shops and service station (Coles Shell). The bed is comfy and the room is clean. Loved the restaurant/ pub downstairs. Good value for money. Would stay here again next time we visit Canberra.
The Village Hostels Canberra provides a great experience with its central location, clean rooms, and well-equipped kitchen. The friendly staff and inviting atmosphere make it a top choice for a pleasant stay in Canberra
Very central location with clean room and comfortable beds.
The park next to the hotel is a bonus for families travelling with kids.
Dinners are nice at the on-site restaurant.
Overall is good value for money.
Great location, right across the road from the Canberra centre, yet very quiet as the unit faces towards the back. Apartment was well presented and beautifully clean. Parking was a bonus. Check in was very easy.
Great room and was lucky enough to be upgraded upon arrival.
Excellent service which was a standout. The usual high attention to detail when staying at an Ovolo. Will stay there every time I am in Canberra.
Location is great when visiting our Son in Canberra. Love the area as it has everything we need. Shopping centre close by and resteraunts close to hotel. Vikings club just next door also.
